How To Help Your Senior Parent Find A Purpose

Companion care at home in Tigard, OR

One of the things that can help your mom or dad stay happy and healthy at home as they get older is having a purpose. Everyone needs to have a sense of purpose and a reason to get up in the morning, especially seniors.

When seniors retire, they often lose their sense of purpose. Not having a job to go to or a family to take care of can leave your mom or dad feeling lost. If your mom or dad recently lost a partner they may feel very keenly like they don’t have a purpose anymore.

Not having a sense of purpose can affect your mom or dad’s physical and mental health. They may suffer from new aches and pains, or stop wanting to get out of bed. They also can have a higher risk for heart attacks and strokes if they are feeling lonely or depressed.

Companion care at home is a fantastic way to help your mom or dad find a purpose again. If your mom or dad has companion care at home they will get regular visits from a companion who can help them explore new opportunities, learn new skills, or make crafts and art. Companion care at home can give your mom or dad a new positive outlook on life.

Some other things that you can do to help your mom or dad find a sense of purpose and a reason to get up every day are:

Encourage Them to Take Up a New Hobby

Hobbies are a great way for your mom or dad to have fun while bringing joy to everyday life. Encourage your mom or dad to try new activities, or revisit old interests they enjoyed in the past.

This could include gardening, painting, sewing, woodworking, or playing a musical instrument. Hobbies provide a creative outlet and a sense of accomplishment, making each day more fulfilling. If there’s something that your mom or dad always wanted to do but they never had time to do it before encourage them to try it now.

Help Them Set Small, Achievable Goals

Having goals, no matter how simple, can give your parent something to work toward and look forward to. Some good goals for seniors are learning a new skill, like using a smartphone, completing a puzzle, or even organizing old photo albums. Companion care at home can help seniors achieve these goals, no matter how small, which can boost their confidence and make them feel productive and purposeful.

Help Them Find Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering is an excellent way for seniors to connect with others and feel like they’re making a difference. Look for opportunities that match your parent’s interests and physical abilities.

For example, they could knit blankets for a local charity, tutor children, or help at a food pantry. Volunteering not only gives them a reason to get up each day but also strengthens their sense of purpose through helping others.

Encourage Them To Record Family History

Your mom or dad’s life experiences and knowledge of family history are very important. Encourage them to share their stories and the family history by writing a memoir, recording family history, or teaching others something they’re skilled at, like cooking or crafting. Knowing that their life has meaning and that they can pass on knowledge to others can bring deep satisfaction and purpose.
