Nursing Home

Learn more about the definition of a nursing home and how it differs from in home care.

What is a Nursing Home?

Today in the United States there are over 16,000 nursing homes. Nursing homes, also known as skilled nursing facilities, are for seniors who require constant medical care and need significant assistance with the activities of daily living. The goal of care in a nursing home is to help individuals meet their daily physical, medical, social, and psychological needs. A nursing home is generally a stand alone facility, but some are operated within a hospital or an assisted living community.

Activities of daily living include bathing, dressing, and meal preparation but may also extend to assistance with transportation, paying bills, making appointments, and simply being there to provide companionship and emotional support.

Home care services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and can be paid for directly by the client or through a variety of public and private funding sources such as Long Term Care Insurance, workers’ compensation, and Medicaid.nursing home

Residents of nursing homes generally have high care needs and complex medical conditions that require routine skilled nursing services. Due to the constant care needs of its residents, a nursing home is required by federal law to have a licensed nurse on duty 24 hours a day. Residents typically share a room and are served meals in a central dining area. Residents should have the opportunity to be involved in activities that provide mental, physical, and social stimulation. Be sure to ask about activities offered when you tour the facility.

The average cost of care for nursing home care ranges between $6,000 to $10,000 per month. Cost is determined by the level of care needed, the setting where the care is provided, and the geographic location. Due to the high cost of care, many residents use supplemental funding from the government in the form of Medicare and/or Medicaid.

    Testimonials

    Rebecca

Thank you for sending Tina into my mother’s home. Tina was like a ray of sunshine entering a window that had been closed off for a very long time. Tina was extremely attentitive and caring while handling very demanding and challenging daily tasks. Her friendship and care for my mother during her final days was touching. Feel free to add me to your referral list.

    Joanne

Thanks so much for helping us find the right care solution for my Mother. She loves living at the assisted living community and has made a couple of friends already. Your assistance and knowledge were greatly appreciated and it took a lot of stress off of our shoulders during a very difficult period for our family.

    Susan

We wanted to thank you for sending a wonderful caregiver - Julie. She has been such a needed help to our father during his last year of life. Julie was always on time and always happy to do what was required to care for our beloved father when he needed it most. Thank you so much for all your support and help.

    Joan

I wanted to thank you for all your great help and assistance this past 3 months during our mother’s surgery and recovery. She speaks so highly of the caregiver (Annette). Thank you for helping my Mom get back on her feet again. She looks great! All the best.

    Angela

Thank you so much for your outstanding homecare services and support. The caregivers working with my Dad at home are always on time and very professional. Your attention to the daily details of our situation and quick response time to resolve issues as they have arisen has been outstanding. You have no idea how much stress you have relieved in our ayour service and continued support. I would recommend you to anyone.

    Stephanie

Thank you for helping us find the right board and care facility for my Dad. He really likes the place and we can tell that he is starting to move out of his depression little by little. I can’t thank you enough for driving us around and helping us find the right place for him - I don’t know how we would have done it without you.
